Film from a Time Ago

A time ago, in some months far away, I had two lomo films that I shot and needed to get developed. Thing is, I was moving to Chicago, where a lomography store is, so I just kinda held onto the rolls for a monthish and got them developed once I moved. So, really, everything is from the fourth of July.

 

I finally shot my roll of Lomography’s 110 Red Scale, which I’ve held on to for I think two years now? I’ve just had it for a really long time and FINALLY shot it. The colors came out interesting. I’m curious as to why the one photograph of the Battle Creek Air Show came out in purples and yellowish-whites, but I love it and would have loved it in other photos.

I also hot with my Diana for the first time, with Lomochrome XR Purple 120 Film. I was doing multiple exposures without realizing it, because on the Diana you have to remember to wind and to stop, because there isn’t a like, automatic stop like there is on normal film cameras. You really have to pay attention. I’m not a huge fan of that technical part, but I still enjoyed shooting with it.

I love hot air balloons. Is it next summer yet so I can see more?

Getting more use out of 110 pocket film is a goal of mine, mostly because I have had one of my 110 photos win a prize and another is currently on exhibit in Massachusetts. So, I’m just kinda like, “Why not shoot more?”

Take Me to Abandoned Warehouses to Show Me Our Love is Real

Want to win my heart?

Scout out an abandoned warehouse, because you know I will love it and will want to take pictures there.

In the tiny little village of Colon, MI, there is an abandoned warehouse filled with porcelain, furniture, sewing things, mirrors… It’s crazy. There is a room where the floor is covered with Red Book and Better Homes and Gardens and Women’s Weekly magazines. There is so much to find, and I was fortunate enough to have a wonderful partner who found this place for me, talked to the owners, and won me an afternoon there.

Since the place was so dilapidated, I knew I wanted to do something that went past the usual “urban decay” aesthetic that everyone loves so much (and what I find to be boring…) I was brainstorming my life away, bouncing ideas off my mother at 4AM, and a body of work formed in my head.

Abandoned warehouse + virginal clothing = MUCH ART. VERY STATEMENT. WOW.

Seriously though, this place was amazing. I found two rolls of Kodak film from 1965, which are more likely toast, but whatever– I have a roll of Verichrome and that’s all that matters to me.

I also brought my Voigtlander Brillant V6, hoping to get some more vintage looking shots, but thank goodness I brought my digital camera with me because my film didn’t turn out so hot. Here are just a few that came out neat– they are nothing like what I wanted, but they are still cool and worth sharing.

Weirdly enough, the markings on the paper that is on the 120 film ended up on my negatives. Light leak? I haven’t the slightest clue, but it looks awesome.

I’ve been at this photography thing long enough to have seen enough decayed buildings to last me for the rest of my career. But man, this was a special place. It is currently owned by an Amish couple (I think? Maybe a lot of Amish folks own it, idk,) and they sell the antiques that are currently in the building. It’s a really neat set up.

Old Camera, Old Graves

When I was in New Orleans, I brought along my Voigtlander Brillant. I thought it would be a great camera to bring, since the images that usually come out of it have a weird over-cast antiquated look, and New Orleans is, well, old. I thought it would work out well. Turns out I was right.

I took it to New Orleans Cemetery #3 (because that’s where I took most of my photos, to be honest,) and took some shots. Oh, I also took a shot in the French Quarter.

Also, that last image– I’m not saying it’s a ghost but, I mean. there wasn’t a light or anything in the scene when I snapped the photo, and the content interested me because it’s a broken up grave site, so I mean… I’m not saying it’s a ghost or anything, but I’m not saying it isn’t. Let’s have fun and accept it’s really weird.

Une journée à Versailles

Today is a good day. I got my prints and negatives from the shoot I did in the gardens at Versailles:

The first image was an accident. Whoops. The other two, not so much. My Voigtlander Brillant v6 did exactly what I wanted it to do, which was create a foggy, dreamlike effect. I think I found a good use for this camera.

Some unfortunate things did happen. I had two potentially AWESOME photographs, but… I somehow accidentally double exposed them? I have NO IDEA how I accomplished this on my ancient camera, but whatever. That’s why I shot in digital, too.

I tried emulating the dream-like effect that my medium format camera wielded, but I didn’t get close at all. I do like what I ended up with though- the feeling I wanted is still there.

Originally, this shoot was going to have at least six or seven girls in it, but plans got all mixed up and our group all didn’t end up going to Versailles on the same day. It was for the best though, because it was difficult enough arranging three girls in an unknown place- I can’t imagine trying to do that with six or seven girls! Though, hopefully one day I can get a chance.

So, yeah, another international shoot under my belt. I have one more set of photos I’m waiting on that features a model, so keep an eye out. Until then, you know what to do: Happy Shooting!

 

Brill[i]ant, Simply Brill[i]ant!

I mentioned in my post about my trip to Stratford-upon-Avon that I bought a Twin Lens Reflex camera. It’s a Voigtlander Brillant v6, and it took me two hours and a migraine to figure out how to use it. I bought film for it, I filled the film, I got the roll developed, and now I have the scans!

The fact that photographs actually turned out of this thing is a thrill for me. One, it’s a hella old camera so I was worried photos wouldn’t even turn out at all. Two, it’s the most complicated camera I have ever used, so there was that. I’m really diggin’ the hazy quality of the images, and the light leaks in the last two pictures are awesome. I love those.

For some reason I thought it would be a good idea to take it out for night photography, and I surprisingly got a few good images from that spontaneous and not-well-thought-out event. I guess learning how to meter without a light meter is really paying off, since I’m getting good enough to guess exposures at night time with an ancient camera. Kudos to my professors and friends and Google who taught me all the things.

I’m taking it out for a spin when I go to Paris next weekend. I’m doing a photo shoot at Versailles with a few girls from my program, so that should be fun. The softness and the colors I have my models wearing and the location will all fit together nicely.
